Baton Rouge was a gigantic sheet of ice this morning. With a profound lack of sand/salt trucks, most people did the right thing and just stayed home. I, however, did not. :)

What you see in the pic is nothing but ice. That’s what it looked like everywhere I went. I was shocked that I didn’t see any cars in the ditch!

I witnessed only two dumbasses on the road this morning. The first was in a mid-’80s S-10 Blazer. He was sitting sideways across two lanes of a four-lane divided highway. He finally got it together enough to make his way to the shoulder.

The second was in a late-model F-150 4x4. He kept spinning the rears and sliding all over his lane in a vain attempt to get traction. Sheesh, get off the gas!

This is why the South gets shut down at the least hint of snow.

As I said to Bateman yesterday, I will be the first to make fun of southerners when 1/4" of snow is treated as the end of days. Sheet ice is another thing entirely. That crap will kill you for sport.

Problem is that 1/4" of snow usually becomes some form of sheet ice down here. Slightly warm roads plus afternoon precipitation plus freezing weather equals sheet ice by the next morning.

Yeah fuck that haha. I would stay home too, just not worth it. You only get that once every couple of years so its a nice day to spend at home. Although it would be kind of cool to go out with the road to yourself like that, assuming you arent on summer tires of course. Now that I do not have winter at all, its kind of nice to just not worry about that anymore. I definitely do not miss spending 15 minutes every morning to scrape ice off of my windows and warm up the car.

It’s the first time I’ve had to scrape real ice off the windows in years. I would have stayed home, but between taking care of my mom last year , being on “business necessity leave” last fall , and catching the flu last week , I have no vacation and no sick leave remaining. Any time I take off for the next few months will be without pay.

That’s a good point.

Its unfortunate that you have to choose between braving the storm or not getting paid. And I suppose even more unfortunate for some others who have to choose between going or being fired outright. I guess thats the one good thing about my 400+ hours of sick leave I have saved up and that it continuously accrues since I never use it. I could take off like a month and a half with that lol.

Before 2017, I could have done the same. I burned two months of sick leave taking care of my mom before she passed. I burned all of my vacation while on forced leave so I could keep a paycheck coming in. I have no idea why paying me to take time off is any different than paying me while I sit at my desk twiddling my thumbs, but someone in accounting decided they are different. One negatively impacts overhead and the other does not.

Yah thats odd. I know ive had to take forced time off like that, but I just didnt get paid during that time. I had plenty of leave but couldnt use it for the logical reason you said. Its crazy how an office can shut down to save silly crap like literally keeping the lights on. Whereas its fine to have a meeting to plan a meeting for longer than the actual meeting lol.
